Major Advances in FileMaker Pro 10 March 20, 2009 T. J. Weaver 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
FileMaker Pro 10 includes many significant software improvements. The new Script Triggers is a wonderful step forward. This enhancement allows scripts to be invoked at many more control points throughout the database. Gone are the days of trying to force the database users to only do things one specific way. Now the users can navigate a database in their own way to maximize creativity and productivity and the database programmer can be sure that all necessary side actions and security are provided. Although enhanced Script Triggers is not the only enhancement, this one expanded feature is worth far more than the cost of the upgrade.
A worthy upgrade for FileMaker power users February 24, 2009 P. Gerlings 7 out of 7 found this review helpful
While I'm still a bit sentimental about the old interface, the new one is a nice improvement. No more having to create "add new" or "delete" icons (among others) for users of customized solutions. But the big news is script triggers, which allow for a whole new world of control over users' actions/inputs. With this piece, FileMaker has really come into its own as a sophisticated (yet still very easy to use) relational database developer tool.
There are, of course, several things that can still be added to version 11, including innate graphing capabilities (not having to rely on plug-ins) and more seamless integration with SQL databases (although the current set up will probably be good for most users).
There is, happily, no file format upgrade (again!), so migration from versions 7-9 is a no brainer. And solutions created in version 10 are backwards compatible back to version 7, although obviously some features are version specific, and are not all able to work with pre-10 versions.
All in all, it's a good buy for those who push FileMaker beyond its basic capabilities.
File Maker in general February 13, 2009 Gerald Barrow (Trinidad) 6 out of 8 found this review helpful
I've been using File Maker Pro from version 1 to 9 and it is a very powerful, user friendly and versatile data management program. Nothing even comes close. I've created applications as diverse as organizing my coin collection, with hundreds of scanned images, to running my laboratory, which now has over 130,000 reports. It even does the accounts, and you can train others to use it in minutes.
Versions 1 to 7 became unstable above 2GB of data, but version 9 is holding out so far at 4GB, which is not a large file by today's standards. Version 9 requires on-line activation, which means that it will only work on one computer. The same will probably be true of version 10. All versions are subject to crash every now and then and it is important to save a copy each time you use it since the recovery feature does not always work. The upgrades are way too expensive for what little benefit you get - i.e. more restrictions and features you probably don't need. If the version 10 upgrade does not work below 8.0 then I would not bother since I still use 7.0 on all my other computers. My advice is - Don't upgrade just for the thrill of having the latest. Stick to your older versions if they work for you. They probably have features and capabilities you haven't yet explored.
Beware The Upgrade............. November 13, 2009 dwmusic (Schaumburg, IL) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I got a trial version of FM 10 off the FileMaker web site, tried it out and liked it. I had been using FM 6 for a very long time. I had purchased FM 8 a while back when I took an online class. The FileMaker web site said I would be able to pay the UPGRADE price as long as I was upgrading from FM 8 or 9. Well, I had FM 8 so I was OK, or so I thought.
I get FM 10 and try to install it, but it would not allow the upgrade. Even though I had FM 8 installed on my hard drive and had the original FM 8 disc and install codes, serial numbers, etc., it kept saying I the serial number was not valid for an upgrade.
Apparently, it would not allow me to upgrade from an "educational" version of FM Pro : (
There was no mention on the FileMaker web site about this caveat.....
Worthless unless you have at least version 8. Thanks, FileMaker. February 3, 2009 Lowest Gear (Denver, CO) 16 out of 21 found this review helpful
Beware.
Amazon needs to warn buyers that this upgrade only works back to version 8.
FileMaker offers version 7 owners Full Retail Price as their generous incentive for upgrading.
A cynical consumer might draw the conclusion that Filemaker is using the frequency of their expensive updates as the excuse for dropping any sort of upgrade value to those of us who bought their product at full retail prior to version 8. You get to buy the product for Full Retail. Again.
They toss us into the Full Retail Dumpster reserved for customers who haven't paid frequently enough without so much as a token gesture of a discount toward retaining our loyalty. Even Microsoft and Adobe are more considerate toward owners of older versions. Way to go, FileMaker.
At least Amazon was prompt and courteous about taking the return. Too bad they did not provide accurate documentation in the first place. (The perils of Early Adoption!)
