Quick Easy Clean Install and Use September 30, 2009 javajunki 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
Many years ago when Nuance first started I was a regular user that purchased nearly all updates - however, after the quality of the products began to falter I all but left anything with the Nuance name alone and searched elsewhere. When this came up I thought I'd give it a try although I own Adobe Pro.
At least on my PC machine, this was a quick/easy installation. No "bugs" were noticed to date, it performed quickly without showing any type of sluggish behavior.
Creating pdf's is a breeze but also modifying existing files and saving into different formats. For example, I have a scanned document that needed one line correction and insert of a name change then saved as both a pdf and jpeg. This took less than 1 minute to open the file, make the required modification and save it as both a pdf and jpeg.
Modifying large or extensive documents is a bit less direct - it can be done but became burdensome...then again, I have yet to find any program that does it perfectly at this price point.
This contains several nice additions including watermark, digital signature,
standard editing/notations, security settings etc...plenty of tools to create forms for use online or via email. Familiar outline makes quick work of learning.
For quick edits, pdf creation etc...solid product without drama. For extensive edits...will stick with adobe but for price difference this would be a strong contender.
New to PDF Conversion and Loving It October 15, 2009 John P. Sullivan (Roseville, CA) 6 out of 6 found this review helpful
I am fairly new to PDF conversion, mainly because I hadn't had much use for it, or so I thought. I had no problems installing and activating PDF Professional 6.0. It integrates nicely into the applicable Office 2007 products as well as Internet Explorer. The customizable installation options are very flexible. Although I installed everything, it was nice having such flexibility.
The PDF Professional 6.0 software interface is fairly straightforward. The toolbars are easy to see "classic-style" button groups, with the simple right-click add and remove, context sensitive pop-up menu. Drop down menus are well-grouped and full featured.
While I went through the software I came to find an exhaustively complete toolset for editing, annotating, securing, converting and sharing. Without having yet read the documentation, I was easily able to convert my test document from Word and Excel (2007) into PDF. I easily converted an existing PDF of text and graphic into an editable Word document and back as well.
I was excited at the notion of making PDFs from Internet Explorer 8, as I'm always doing screen captures of my concert ticket confirmations and bill payments and the like. I was initially horrified by an "Access Denied" error message I would get during the process, but after digging around for a while, I discovered that it is necessary to temporarily disable "Protected Mode" in my "Internet Options" on the "Security" tab in order to complete the conversion. I think a more informative error message would have been nice, but it was worth the trouble of figuring it out. What an awesome timesaver web-to-PDF is for me!
Through continued use of PDF Professional 6, I'm still impressed with the features and built-in tools I discover - there are plenty. I would say it's definitely worth its price (I would never have dropped a couple hundred fifty on Adobe - not dismissing its value, of course). I'm privileged to have been given the opportunity to evaluate this product. I'm happy with it...I recommend it...and most importantly, I use it!
Very nice PDF Converter for the Price - The Reference Guide is Excellent! September 9, 2009 Diana De Avila (Malta, NY USA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
Installation of this product was easy. I installed it on a Dell XPS M1530 Laptop using Vista Ultimate. I had no problems which was nice.
Out of the box (without reading a thing), the program works as expected, but I had to hunt and peck a little bit I started by using an MS Word document that I wanted to convert to a PDF document. After all was said and done, this conversion was actually done through a button (like a plug-in) that was located on my MS Word toolbar. This was great to know (once I hunted for it and found it). But it was not the initial logic I used to do the conversion.
Here's what I did and what many might be inclined to do:
1) Open PDF Converter.
2) Attempt to open the MS Word File in PDF Converter to convert to PDF.
Instead:
1) Open MS Word
2) Open your desired file that you want to convert to PDF
3) Find the Nuance PDF Converter button added to your installation of MS Word (click it). Cool!
Each program that can be used with PDF Converter has it's own way of initiating the conversion process and things may seem unintuitive at first ... but there is logic in the madness. The first thing that I would recommend to all those who are contemplating getting this product is taking the time to go through the 41 page "Reference Guide". There is so much in there. I think I read another reviewer stating that they could not figure out how to make multiple file PDF's ??? It's actually in the reference guide and the program comes with a "PDF Creation Assistant" which can be summoned from the Windows Start Menu. This is your BUDDY if you want to create multiple file PDFs.
This may not be Adobe ... but it's got some pretty darn good stuff in it for the money. To get the most out of your buck, take the time to read the Reference Guide and learn the functionality -- otherwise you may only be using a fraction of the program.

Works exactly like it promises September 25, 2009 T. Stewart (Santa Cruz) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
PDF Converter Pro 6.0 does exactly what it promises.
It will easily convert files in a PDF format in a matter of second. But what really makes this product worth the money is that it will convert PDF files into writable documents such as word and excel.
There are several converts available on the market, but its nice to have a non-internet requiring method on my computer.
Very Powerful PDF Suite and Reasonably Priced July 30, 2010 Joseph K. Naneville (Windsor, VA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
For two weeks I evaluated demo versions of PDF Converter Professional 6, NitroPDF Professional Version 6.1.2.1, and ABBYY PDF Transformer 3.0 to determine which one I was going to buy. I was looking for a PDF suite that sells for under $100. PDF Converter Pro runs about $40 to $50 on Amazon, NitroPDF Pro about $40 on [...] and around $55 on Amazon, and ABBY PDF Transformer is about $75 on Amazon. After extensive testing of all three products, I found PDF Converter Professional 6 to be the best PDF package for the money.
I primarily use the software to convert PDF to editable Microsoft Office 2007 programs like Word and Excel. I tried several different document types including downloaded PDF forms, pages printed to PDF format using a simple yet excellent PDF print program called PDF995, and scanned pages ranging from simple text to complex pages with both text and images on the page. PDF Converter Pro simply produced the best and most accurately converted PDF to Word document, which means less correcting and repositioning of converted content. The conversion process is simple and the results are absolutely amazing. ABBYY PDF was a close second but, when converting complex documents with text and multiple images many small details in the document get lost in the conversion process. NitroPDF Pro did a good job when only text was involved, but when presented with both text and images for conversion to an editable PDF which has to be done before it can be converted to a Word document, NitroPDF converted only the text and deleted all images. I e-mailed tech support to see if there was something I was doing wrong and the answer was: "Unfortunately there is no way to overcome this. The OCR tool can only recognize characters and ignores any picture images in the scanned content." To me that is unacceptable. However, NitroPDF did have some clear advantages over the competition including nice looking Microsoft Office like menus and the best PDF editing capability in terms of matching font and horizontal text alignment.
A little more information on how these suites approach the PDF conversion process is in order. All three programs read the document and break it up into text and image boxes. ABBYY PDF Transformer has the most versatile pre-conversion capabilities, allowing users to review and rearrange the boxes, delete unwanted boxes, and whether to treat the box as text or image before conversion. The user can change the box say for example from a text box to an image box which allows for more accurate reproduction during conversion. As I noted earlier, NitroPDF ignores any images and only produces text boxes. PDF Converter Pro simply converts the entire document or a selected area of the document to Word and the user has to rearrange or delete any unwanted boxes in Word.
You may have noticed that comparisons of converted documents are referenced to Word 2007. That's because ABBYY PDF Transformer 3 only converts to Word, plus it does not have the ability to scan documents directly into it like NitroPDF and PDF Converter Pro. To be able to scan documents directly or convert them to anything besides Word you need to purchase ABBYY FineReader 10 Pro which sells for around $365 on Amazon. Luckily most scanners come with software to scan to PDF which can then be opened by any of these suites. When it came to converting scanned documents to Word, PDF Converter Pro 6 out performed NitroPDF and ABBYY hands down.
PDF Converter Pro 6 also does a good job converting tables to Excel. NitroPDF did a good job when presented with simple tables but, when tables are embedded in the document and surrounded by text, NitroPDF often failed to recognize them and tells you there is nothing to export to Excel. I even cropped some embedded tables using NitroPDF, saved them, and tried to export them to Excel and it still told me there was nothing it recognized and could convert to Excel. PDF Converter Pro 6 did a much better job recognizing embedded tables surrounded by text, accurately reproducing the table along with the surrounding text which can then be deleted in Excel. PDF Converter Pro 6 also allows you to crop any area in the document. With PDF Converter Pro 6, I cropped embedded tables, saved and sent them to Excel with no problem. ABBYY PDF Transformer 3 does not convert PDF to Excel.
With PDF Converter Professional 6, you can create new PDF documents from scratch or from practically any source (i.e. File, Scanner, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Internet Explorer, Firefox, Windows Explorer, drag and drop, or from any Windows print-capable application using the Print command); markup and edit PDF documents; add stamps, clip art, watermarks, sounds, and movies; create and edit custom and fillable forms from scratch, or from file or a scanned form; and split, delete, and rearrange PDF pages. PDF Converter Professional 6 will convert PDF documents to Word, Excel, Powerpoint, WordPerfect, and Rich Text Format.
Heck, PDF Converter Professional 6 will even read a PDF document to you so you can verify the accuracy and the order of text. I decided to give it a try and it blew me away. I opened my PDF resume and sure enough it started reading it, and it read it accurately. It even pronounced my last name correctly. I couldn't believe it. I was very impressed with this feature. I just wish a female voice was an available option. I love to experiment with software and based on what I heard from PDF Converter Pro 6, I will probably be giving Dragon Naturally Speaking 10 a demo run soon.
PDF Pro will NOT read some PDF documents directly because they are image files. However, when the file is opened in PDF Converter Pro 6 the program will ask you if you want to make the document searchable (if this option is enabled) Answer Yes and make sure the Keep Original Image is checked. If PDF Pro does not ask if you want to make the text searchable, you will have to enable it manually. Click on Edit and select Preferences. Under Preferences you will see Document and under that Searchable PDF Document. Make sure Keep Original Image and Process All Pages are checked, and Do Not Look for Image-Only Pages Automatically is unchecked (next time an image PDF is opened, PDF Pro will ask if you want to convert it to searchable text). You can also convert the image PDF to Searchable Text using the Tools drop menu, select Make Searchable PDF. After the conversion is complete, click on the Tools drop down menu and select Tag PDF. The document can now be read by PDF Converter Pro 6. Some proprietary books allow you to print the book. Printing it to a PDF format using the Scansoft PDF Create print driver installed by PDF Pro 6 allows you to then convert the document to readable text as described above.
PDF Converter Professional is not without flaws. For some reason, PDF Converter Pro converted the documents to 2007 format but would not open them automatically and would give a "doc.x there is no associated application installed" message. When left unchecked, the results of the conversion pop up in Office 2007 in compatibility mode. I recommend users leave the "Generate Office 2007 output" box unchecked in the Output Format options. The PDF Converter Pro 6 interface and menus are not as attractive as NitroPDF or ABBYY PDF and can be a little difficult to navigate at first. It takes a little time and experimenting to understand exactly what every thing does but, once you learn you will discover you have a very powerful program in front of you.
The three PDF suites I decided to try before I buy allow users to download and evaluate full versions of their products before buying. NitroPDF and ABBYY give users a two week trial. PDF Converter Professional 6 gives users a 30 day trial. I recommend downloading all three and putting them to the test side by side to see which one best meets your needs and expectations. For me, PDF Converter Professional 6 was simply the most powerful and reasonably priced PDF software available. PDF Converter Pro 6 was ranked second only to Adobe Acrobat Pro on the TopTenREVIEWS website ([...]). Adobe sells for about $450. PDF Converter Pro 6 retails for about $99 (i.e. Office Max. Office Depot, Staples. Nuance) and I have seen it on sale locally for around $50. However, Amazon offers it at a bargain every day which is why I purchased it from them.
