Using a Prior Version of Quicken Mac?

We're very excited about the all-new Quicken Essentials for Mac. Not only does it solve the core Quicken jobs better, it also provides the ease of use and elegant user interface Mac customers have come to expect from their applications.

Quicken Mac 2007 and earlier users should note that this is a brand new product, so some of the features you've grown used to may not be included. Because we want to make sure we're providing you with the solution that best meets your needs, we've answered a few questions that can help you determine whether or not Quicken Essentials for Mac is right for you.

1. Can I track my investments?
Yes, Quicken Essentials for Mac allows you to track the overall value of your investment accounts and the value of your specific holdings. It will not, however, track investment buys and sells, nor will it provide some advanced investment performance reports. If you need more more advanced investment features, try Quicken Mac 2007.

2. Can I export my data to TurboTax?
Quicken Essentials for Mac does not support that capability. If you'd like that functionality, we recommend trying Quicken Mac 2007.

3. Can I pay my bills within Quicken?
While you cannot pay bills within the product itself ("direct bill pay"), you can track your bills and make sure you have enough cash to pay them when they're due. A few alternatives available include using Quicken Mac 2007 or using the bill pay functionality on Quicken Bill Pay.

4. Can I transfer my data from an older version of Quicken Mac?
Yes, you can transfer data from Quicken Mac 2005, 2006 and 2007.

5. Can I convert my Quicken Windows data to Quicken Essentials for Mac?
Yes, it converts Quicken Windows 2007, 2008 and 2009 data.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for most users...   June 18, 2010

Yes, Quicken Essentials won't store your investment transaction history, won't allow you to export your data to Turbo Tax, and doesn't have bill pay capabilities. But then, IT SAYS SO RIGHT ON THE PACKAGE. What it does do, and does extremely well, is:

Allow you to maintain a checkbook register, categorize transactions, and track your spending and income.

Maintain the current value of your investments, updating them all with a single click.

Track your net worth.

Import all of your credit card transactions and automatically categorize each item.

Provide clear, easy-to-read, reports and graphs of your spending in each category.

Which is exactly what I need and most people probably want.

Comparing QEM to previous versions of Quicken isn't all that fair. I realize that some people want to track each buy/sell transaction on their investments and pay their bills without leaving Quicken -- if that's you, then QEM won't do the job.

I tried iBank and Moneydance but didn't like either one. iBank crashed within minutes of setting up my accounts and doesn't have the excellent reports that QEM has. And, it wouldn't import data from Vanguard or Fidelity, two of the largest brokerage firms. QEM does both flawlessly. Moneydance has more features but is a bit awkward to use and not terribly Mac-like.

QEM is excellent for my needs. I update all of my accounts, investments, checking, and credit cards, easily and automatically, each day.

The final selling point for me was the price (I bought it for $39.95 at OfficeMax with a coupon) and the fact that unlike most software products, Intuit offers a 60-day unconditional money-back guarantee. If you don't like it, just return it for your money back. iBank only offers a guarantee if you buy it from them online.

QEM has never crashed and does just what I need. I recommend it highly. Try it and if you don't like it, just send it back.

5 out of 5 stars Quicken Essentials for Mac   July 28, 2010

I have been a pc person for 20+ yrs. Just recently, I decided to go for the new iMac. With my new iMac, I needed new financial software to balance my checking accounts, etc. The interface is a little bit different from 2004 Quicken for windows, but functions the same. Over 2 weeks or so, I have gotten used to the new interface and am happy I made that purchase. My checking accounts are balanced, I can see my spending habits, and schedule upcoming payments to make. I am pleased with this purchase, although I don't use it as others may. I don't track investments or download data from the net. I manually input everything (out of habit) against my online statements for 3 checking accounts. Works fine. I am happy. Thank you.

5 out of 5 stars For me, it's perfect   March 26, 2010

Review is for the product, not the price. I think it's overpriced for the lack of features compared to the windows version, so I'm looking at this strictly from the application standpoint.

I've used quicken and money varying between products since the inception of both. But I'm one of the people who simply wants a place to keep tabs of my checking information. I never used it for investments, for writing checks or bill pay. So for me, I was getting a ton of features in previous versions when I was using Windows thatI never touched, and for me just cluttered up everything.

I was happy when they announced the Mac essentials version coming out this year, since I just transitioned from over 20 years of windows use to my first macbook last summer. And while I have windows 7 running in fusion and boot camp, I wanted my financial stuff to be in the same OS as the rest of my personal things... So I ran Ibank for the interim period, and while it suited my needs, it wasn't able to download from my bank directly, so I was manually marking things as cleared and such by comparing it to my online bank website. Pain. Even in the 2009 version I had in Windows of Quicken, that one also couldn't directly connect and download my data for me. I had to download the files from my bank and then import them to quicken 2009...

Since all my bill pay is free through my bank, and I actually like the interface, I've become accustomed to that as my way of paying everything. I haven't had paper checks in about 6 years now, so being unable to print a check from this version doesn't hinder me at all. And since I could not directly connect with any previous version of quicken to my bank, not being able to just pay bills directly from quicken isn't a drawback for me since I never did it before. No matter what I did previously, I had to do things in multiple locations. For me this is the "norm".

The interface is nice. I like the uncluttered feel. It starts very quickly, unlike my 2009 quicken for windows, or even Ibank on my mac. I instantly can see the main info. I also like on top the ability to, with a single click, change the view from my actual balance to the online balance. That way it's easy for me to see what hasn't cleared yet, and make sure the numbers add up.

Quick and easy on the eyes overview page, and I like the category explorer. Makes it easy to get a good view of the last span of whatever length of time you pick.

All I wanted to track with this was my checking accounts, which I can do easier and more clearly than with any other version of money management software. Drag and drop matching is nice too when it updates with my bank and doesn't match the proper entry and rather creates a duplicate.

If you have simple needs like me, this is a great app. Pricey, but i'm happy with it even for the price since for the first time I can actually do the things I wanted to do all along. If you need more complexity, avoid it like the plague, but if you're like me, it's fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars Quicken Essentials   March 24, 2010

Wow, what negative reviews. I used Quicken 2007 for some time now and have never liked the interface on the Mac but it did the job. I reviewed, downloaded, and tried most of the top money management programs for Mac's and was not impressed. They were either really simplistic or tried to pack in everything they possibly could making it very hard to use.

Despite the reviews I figured they have a money back guarantee so would at least try it. (they do not have a trial version)

It is far superior to the 2007 version. One of my favorite GUI improvements is containing everything with in one window frame. The latter had way too many windows floating around. Works seamlessly with my banks, easy entry, easy scheduled transaction setup, good but not excellent budget features, etc. I am very pleased with my purchase as it does everything I need it to do and more. I use more features and tools as they are easier to work with, understand, and setup.

For all the negative comments it looks like they are looking for a much more advanced program.. did they not read the description? It is called "Quicken Essentials". I love it as it does everything I need to do and more.

5 out of 5 stars Alternative to Q-online if you don't like Mint   March 26, 2010

I like Quicken Online quite a bit, but don't care for the Mint format and presentation which is replacing Quicken Online sometime in the near future. So, if you are content with Quicken Online, but don't like Mint, Quicken Essentials may be just the place for you to go when Q-Online comes to an end.

I was a bit leery of QE but after looking at all the options, I decided to give it a try. I like everything about it. I think that anyone who is satisfied with Q-Online will be absolutely thrilled with QE. For the average person, it seems like QE is just the thing. If you download the software, it appears to me that getting a refund is pretty easy if you want to return it, and won't even cost you a stamp. You can do it all online. So, giving it a try should really not be an issue.
